A thermocouple consists of two wires of dissimilar metals welded together into a junction. At the other end of the signal wires, usually as part of the input instrument, is another junction called the reference junction. Heating the sensing junction generates a thermoelectric potential (emf) proportional to the temperature difference between the two junctions. This millivolt-level emf indicates the temperature at the sensing tip. Southern Heat offers several types of Extruder Thermocouples.

Thermocouple Survey Checklist – PDF
Adjustable Depth Thermocouples
These Adjustable Depth Thermocouples come standard with a tube diameter of 3/16″ and a tip dimension equal to 3/8″. The constructions consist of grounded 20 gauge Type J stranded armor cable or stainless steel over-braid. These thermocouples are used for applications up to 900°F (482°C) and are used with bayonet adapters.
Fixed Depth Thermocouples
Fixed Depth Thermocouples are made to fit a specific depth in a straight, 45 degree, or 90 degree bend probe with a standard length spring, cap, and required insertion length.
